2021年のウェスタン＆サザンオープンで、全仏オープン以来、3か月ぶりに会見に現れた大坂なおみ選手でしたが、途中で泣き出して中断、というハプニングがありました。
「記者からの厳しい質問で」との報道も見られましたが、何があったのでしょう。その厳しい質問とは？

この会見は、アメリカのシンシナティで開催される、ウェスタン＆サザンオープンの大会前オンライン会見で、現地8/16に行われたものです。
英語では、次のように質問されました。
You’re not crazy about dealing with us, especially in this format, yet you have a lot of outside interests that are served by having a media platform. I guess my question is, how do you balance the two and also do you have anything you’d like to share with us about what you did say to Simone Biles?
おおよその意味は、次の通り。

大坂：No, I’m actually very interested in that like point of view. So if you could repeat that, that would be awesome.

記者：The question was, you’re not especially fond of dealing with the media, especially in this format. You have suggested there are better ways to do it, that we’d like to try to explore that. My question I guess was you also have outside interests beyond tennis, that are served by having the platform that the media presents to you. My question is how do you think you might be able to best balance the two?

大坂：For me I feel like this is something that I can’t really speak for everybody, I can only speak for myself but ever since I was younger I’ve had a lot of media interest on me and I think it’s because of my background as well as, you know, how I play. Because in the first place I’m a tennis player, that’s why a lot of people are interested in me. So I would say in that regard I’m quite different to a lot of people and I can’t really help that there are some things that I tweet or some things that I say that kind of create a lot of news articles or things like that. I know that it’s because I’ve won a couple of grand slams and I’ve got in to do a lot of press conferences that these things happen. But I would also say like, I’m not really sure how to balance it too. I’m figuring it out at the same time as you are, I would say.

大坂の代理人が怒りの反応
この出来事に対し、大坂選手のエージェントであるスチュアート・デュグイド氏は、次のように記者を非難しました。
“The bully at the Cincinnati Enquirer is the epitome of why player / media relations are so fraught right now. Everyone on that Zoom will agree that his tone was all wrong and his sole purpose was to intimidate. Really appalling behavior. And this insinuation that Naomi owes her off court success to the media is a myth – don’t be so self-indulgent.”
シンシナティ・エンクワイラーのいじめっ子は、なぜ選手とメディアの関係が今こんなにこじれているのかの象徴である。あのズーム上の全員が彼のトーンが間違っていて、彼の唯一の目的が威嚇だったことに同意するでしょう。ほんとうにひどい行為だ。そして、なおみのコート外での成功をメディアに依存しているような言い方は、神話である。調子に乗るな。
代理人は、怒りの反応を示しましたが、ネット上では意見がわかれました。代理人が言うような、いじめたりする目的は感じられないし、声のトーンも静かで問題なかったとする人も見るのが苦しかったという人もいて、波紋を呼んでいます。
大坂選手は、司会者が質問をスキップしようか促しても断って、誠実に考えて質問に答えました。泣いてしまったのは、無意識のうちに責められているように感じたのかもしれません。
